Naming Ceremony-2

I had some comments on the article written on October 20, 2005 titled "Naming Ceremony," regarding naming cyclones that hit India. Well, it has already become a reality.

All cyclones in the Bay of Bengal rim countries will henceforth have a name. It was decided last year that Bay of Bengal rim countries like India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives and Oman will contribute to a list of names that would be used like a name book for all cyclones. These group of countries are called WMO tropical Cyclone Escap Panel countries and the list of cyclones is maintained in an alphabetical manner, countrywise.

It was decided to have names that are abstract and gender neutral. Contributions from India include names like Hawa, Agni and Patal.

The cyclone that hit Andhra coast in September was named Pyaar. No not the Hindi word meaning love, but a Myanmarese word meaning "flattened." For India, it is still a new concept. But they are waiting for the next one: Baj. This name is an Indian contribution.

It would be better to have separate names added to the cyclones that is hitting Tamil Nadu
