Rita -- No. 3

Hurricane Rita, the Category 5 hurricane has grown more turbulent, becoming the third most intense storm in history, after Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 and the Labor Day hurricane of 1935. Rita has now attained maximum sustained winds of 265 kph.

The latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center predicted Rita would likely hit Texas on Saturday, but anywhere from southwest Louisiana to northeast Mexico.

President Bush has declared states of emergency in Texas and Louisiana.
